All children need protecting?
Children stay mentally and physically well usually through the home. Parents provide young children a warm, nurturing and safe space where they can grow.
The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child state that
Every child has rights “without discrimination of any kind, irrespective of the child’s or his or her parent’s or legal guardian’s race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national, ethnic or social origin, property, disability, birth or other status” (Article 2).
At Braywood we have highlighted five of these articles although we uphold every right of every child. We teach children how to manage their own mental health, to give them support when they are going through hard times and to ensure that all staff are well trained to spot signs of concern.
A child's mental health
There is a huge wave of Government support to support children's mental health especially in the light of the recent pandemic. The Pupil Premium is funding provided to schools which is additional to main school funding. It is allocated according to the number of pupils on-roll who are eligible for free school meals (FSM), a smaller amount allocated according to the number of children of service families, and an allocation for each pupil who has been ‘Looked After’ (in care) for 6 months or more. Funding includes pupils who have been eligible for free school meals within the past 6 years.
It is for schools to decide how the Pupil Premium is spent, since they are best placed to assess what additional provision should be made for the individual pupils within their responsibility. However, schools are to be held accountable for how they have used the additional funding to support pupils from low-income families. This information must be published on the school website. Please see below for information regarding how the pupils’ premium was spent in the last financial year, the impact of this funding, and the plans for future spending.
